Growing Roses For Cut Flowers
This live realtime workshop is aimed at flower farmers.
My first year growing roses productively for florists in 2018 saw me cut over 200 stems for retail florist shops and wedding and event florists and I have increased my rose stock ever since and now grow over 190 roses on one site.
I’ve learned a few hard lessons on my way to being a fully sustainable flower farm and floristry business and my aim as North East and Yorkshire regional co-ordinator is to help promote the growing and supply of British flowers especially for small scale growers wishing to up their quality game and growing roses is one area which always causes a worry.
Roses are a big investment to any flower farm and choosing what to grow and where to grow them does cause sleepless nights. I now grow over 190 roses in one polytunnel, all undercover, on an irrigation system we designed and installed ourselves.
I grow a mix of named David Austin varieties along with run of the mill floribunda and tea rose varieties, all which are selected for scent and colour.
This 2 hour online real time workshop via zoom takes place from my rose polytunnel and will help equip you with the knowledge and thus more confidence to make your decisions on variety selection and help you plant and care for your roses for years to come.
I will demonstrate pruning both floribunda and hybrid tea varieties, how to plant a bare root rose bush. I will discuss my maintenance regime, watering, feeding, deadheading and pest control methods too. You will finish the workshop more confident to improve your rose offering to your clients and florists.
