Hello March!

Introducing March

What can I tell you about March? Well firstly it brings a new Northumbrian Flowers website design, a more polished and slick client experience created for me by an amazing creative called Gillian Haves. I love it and really hope you do to!

“March, when the days are getting long, let thy growing hours be strong to set right some wintery wrong”

–Caroline may

March is one of the busiest months for a flower farmer florist like me, let me tell you a little about what I do in March.

Firstly its a main seed sowing month, I am usually onto the second and third succession sowing by now. Some flower varieties require a fortnightly sowing and others need 3 weeks between sowing. By making sure I keep to this program I am ensuring continuous abundance of flowers from as early as Mid May right the way through to October and to the first kill frosts to end the season for me.

March is also the last opportunity to set away any winter flowers, these are flower that prefer to grow cold and my favourites are ranunculus, the images below left to right: how ranunculus look before planting, butterfly ranunculus and me, ranunculus pastello a lovely blousy flower perfect for weddings!

I am also starting potting up of tender tuber plants such as dahlias and chocolate cosmos, these are not frost hardy and take a while to wake up but by starting them in March leaves me more time in April to start the big planting out of thousands of seedlings.

I also am finalising flower bed planning, what is to be planted where, adjusting quantities of varieties depending on my own wedding bookings or for florists orders in the summer, I always have winter clearing to finish too but I like to leave the stems and seeds heads on plants until the end of March as there are so many over wintering beneficial insects hibernating amongst curled leaves and in hollow stems, as the weather warms they wake from their winter slumber and make a feast on the emerging greenfly.
